After Harry S. Truman became President, he recalled "a little library in Independence, with some three or four thousand volumes in it . . . From the time I was twelve I spent hours in the library and in reading the books I took out of the library, including the encyclopedias . . ." The library resided at Ott School, which was the high school at that time.
