Harry's Heroes from Ancient History

"You know Miss Wallace, I'm not terribly fond of those so-called heroes like Alexander the Great, Attila the Hun, Ghengis Khan, and Napoleon. I don't think they had anything in mind except conquering for their own personal glory. Don't you agree?"

"Well, I suppose so Harry. They were certainly barbaric in their practices, but that's about as much as I know about them. You're the one who's read up on it." She smiled at him while she stamped his books and slid the cards across the counter for him to sign.

"Well, I prefer to respect the ones who fought for what they thought was right, and for their country, such as Hannibal, Stonewall Jackson, and Robert E. Lee. Now THEY were real heroes!"

Harry thanked Miss Wallace pleasantly and tucked the heavy books under his arm.

"See you tomorrow," he called.

As Miss Wallace glanced out the library window, she noticed Harry's friends had surrounded him. They were dusty and hot-looking after their game. She saw that Harry showed them his new book choices, and watched him hold up his hand to prevent one of the boys from taking a book.

"That Harry Truman," Miss Wallace said, "sure takes good care of our library books. Of course he wouldn't give the book over to that boy with such dirty hands! Uhm-um-um. Why, my land! I think he's read nearly every one of the books in this room. I bet that's close to three thousand books!"

"Nearly all of these books are meant for grownups, too! Yes, indeed, that boy is really something else. I'll bet he goes far one day."
