Individual Biographies


Jan Butler

Jan Butler teaches 4th grade at Spring Branch School. She has taught elementary school for 29 years. Jan received her Master's degree from University of Missouri-Kansas City. She enjoys historical travel, especially along the Oregon Trail, and playing with her four grandchildren.

Jean Chirnside

Jean Chirnside has taught 4th grade for 21 years in Independence, Mo. She received her Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia and her Master's and Reading Specialist degrees from University of Missouri-Kansas City. Having been raised by Republican parents, she never really appreciated President Truman. Then she became involved in a Truman Project in the late 70's. Since then, she has used the life and times of President Truman to teach history and character education.

Kay Cox

Kay Cox received her Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Technology with a major in Graphic Arts from Truman State University, formerly known as Northeast Missouri State University. She worked several years in the advertising field before her employment with the Independence School District. She brings to this project her years of design experience, computer knowledge and enthusiasm to blend the history of yesterday with the education of tomorrow.

Linda Decota

Linda Decota holds a B.A. in Education and an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Missouri. She has taught in the Independence School District for 26 years. Interests include the history of Independence, especially the historic trails. She serves on the Historic Trails Committee, a Mayor's committee for the City of Independence.

Roy Keeland

Roy Keeland taught American History at William Chrisman High School from 1963-1997. He has a Master's in Education with an emphasis in Social Studies. Roy has taught the college credit social studies class to seniors for many years, having his students do research projects at the Truman Library. He enjoys collecting political memorabilia.

Edith LaMastres

Edith LaMastres graduated from the University of Missouri at Kansas City and received her Masters degree from Webster University. She is a first grade teacher at Randall Elementary. This spring, her first grade students presented an original play called "Young Harry Truman," to an audience of over 200 parents and friends.

Nancy Lewis

Nancy Lewis received a B.S. in Social Studies Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia, obtained her Master of Arts in Teaching from Webster University in St. Louis, and over the years has obtained an additional thirty-five graduate hours. She has taught junior and senior high school social studies in the Kansas City area for thirty years, with the last twenty-seven years at Truman High School in Independence. She enjoys sharing the story of our nation's past with her adult education classes and just completed researching and writing for a video "Petticoat Pioneers' scheduled for release in the fall of 1997.

Carl MacDonald

Carl MacDonald teaches World History at William Chrisman High School. From his earliest remembrances, upon his mother's lap, stories were very special. Carl has a Master of Arts degree in Religion and a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education.

Lydia Marlow

The former editor of Missouri State International Reading Association's journal: THE MISSOURI READER, Lydia Marlow is a graduate of Stephens College (B.A.) and University of Missouri-Kansas City (M.A.). She has taught Children's Literature at Webster University and has taught for the Independence School District for 21 years including Head Start, Project REACH (developmentally disabled preschoolers), and second grade. She currently teaches reading one on one to first graders at risk of reading failure at Santa Fe Trail and Procter Schools. Coordinator of the after school Writer's Club at Santa Fe Trail, her interests lie in teaching reading, writing, and getting kid's work published. She has also published several articles and a children's alphabet book. The Truman Whistlestop Project seemed right up her alley.

Heather Mitchell-Hamm

Heather Mitchell-Hamm just completed her ninth year of teaching in the Independence School District. After spending eight years with kindergartners, she chose to move to fifth and enjoyed her first year with them. She earned her Bachelor's degree from Central Missouri State and her Master's degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Heather also instructs technology and computer classes for the Independence district teachers.

Betty Paulsell

Betty Paulsell has taught at Thomas Hart Benton Elementary for 28 years in grades six, five, and one. She holds a Master's degree in education. Her primary interest is in computers and science. She conducts district courses on technology for teachers. On several occasions, she has worked at various Space Centers for NASA and continues an association with NASA. Her hobby is flying a Cessna 172 airplane.

Angie Shilt

Angie Shilt has a Bachelor of Arts/Education from Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, IL, Master of Science/Ed. Administration and Education Specialist/Ed. Administration from the University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri. Angie has 11 year of teaching experience. As a teacher, she has taught in the following programs: Head Start, Learning Disabilities Resource, Remedial Language Arts and Math, Special Education Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and Title I Math. She also has 11 years of administration experience focused on Elementary and Early Childhood.

Dianne Schrik

Dianne Schrik received a M.Ed.- Instructional Applications of Microcomputers, George Mason University and M.Ed.- Special Education, University of Missouri-Kansas City. Her B.S., Ed. - Elementary Education was earned at Central Missouri University. She has taught for 21 years in the regular classroom, secondary journalism, learning disabilities, behavioral development, and gifted education. Currently she is teaching grades 2 through 6 at the IMPACT Center (Independence Missouri's Program for the Academically and Creatively Talented). She loves gardening, traveling, and "messing around with technology."

Kathleen Vest

Kathleen Vest received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and has studied at Cambridge, England and the University of Virginia. She has taught sixth graders for 17 years until recently assuming the position of project coordinator for a United States Challenge Grant called Project WhistleStop. She has worked with the Truman Library on other education projects and teaches university classes on Truman, children's literature, and other history courses. She enjoys traveling and hosting guests from other countries.

Judi Wollenziehn

Judi Wollenziehn has a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and received her Specialist's Degree in Library Science and Information Services from Central Missouri State University. She is a Library Media Specialist at Bridger Junior High School, Independence, Missouri. Her work has been published by various professional journals and publishers.

Gary Krohm (Krohm International Ltd.)

Gary Krohm grew up in the Independence area and attended two years at old William Chrisman High School, just down the street from Truman's home. Due to the area's fast growth, the senior class was split and his group was fortunate to attend the new Truman High School and be its first (1965) graduating class. Gary began developing software for electronic publishing in 1967 and founded Krohm International Ltd. in 1973. When this project was announced, he had a strong personal interest in utilizing his technical background to help the project get from storyboards to CD-ROM and on the Internet.

Ron Barrett (Krohm International Ltd.)

Ron Barrett is a former USAF Officer and TWA Senior Multi-media Instructor. Over the past two decades, he's been involved in digital videographics, multimedia and CD projects for the U.S. government, international airlines, telephone and engineering firms. Ron's instructional skills, used at KI's two storyboarding seminars, helped give other project developers the firm foundation required to complete such a CD-ROM project.
